Our publication about “LEARNING AND TEACHING WITH MOBILE DEVICES AN APPROACH IN SECONDARY EDUCATION IN GHANA” at this year International Conference on Mobile Learning is now online available.

Abstract:

While many developing nations find Internet-based e-learning unsuitable for their needs (lack of technology as well as of accessibility), mobile learning methods – specifically those involving the use of mobile-phones for both formal and informal learning – hold great promise for them (Grimus et al, 2013b). This article examines the chances and challenges of the use of mobile devices to support improvement and transformation of education in a Senior High School in Ghana. It draws attention to the local situation in a field-study looking at infrastructure, development of material and support. A model for teacher training was designed to facilitate teachers’ attitudes and abilities for implementation of mobile learning. The article figures out how mobile devices can be integrated in learning and teaching on the specific background of a school in Ghana. Based on our results we conclude that teachers and students want to use mobile devices in learning. Their perceptions are positive and they developed courses for specific subjects available for eReaders and mobile phones. The results and feedback from two workshops encourage us to propose this model as an example for integration of mobile devices for learning in other regions of Sub Sahara Africa.

Our publication on “Utilizing new technologies for the improvement of problem based learning in the field of medical education” is now published in the book Active and Collaborative Learning: Practices, Problems and Prospects.

Abstract:

In times in which medical education seems to be more complex than ever, facing horrendous student numbers and an increasing accessibility of information, the question of how to ensure the most efficient learning experience remains a vivid point of discussion. Active Learning and its subconcept of Problem Based Learning represent a promising candidate for future improvements in the area of medical education. The utilization of the concept of Problem Based Learning, paired with the latest inventions in web and mobile technologies, finally provides the necessary media to build a possible solution, satisfying the needs of new age education. In this work we report the successful development of a novel reporting system, which focusses on the reliable and fast processing of patient case files during a student’s supervised period of compulsory hospital field work. This novel system enables an improved and fast way of supervisor/student interaction and communication.

[publication] Indoor Navigation by WLAN Location Fingerprinting – Reducing Training-Efforts with Interpolated Radio Map

Our publication on “Indoor Navigation by WLAN Location Fingerprinting – Reducing Training-Efforts with Interpolated Radio Map” for this year UBICOMM conference is now online available.

Abstract:

Due to the fact that smartphones are today already used by about one out of seven persons worldwide and their capabilities concerning hardware and sensors are growing, many different indoor navigation solutions for smartphones exist. The solution presented in this paper is based on Wireless Local Area Network Location Fingerprinting. Fingerprinting is a method where signals at a number of specific points are measured once and stored in a database that is needed to determine the position later on. Measuring each and every fingerprint makes the off-line phase a complex and very time- intensive process, especially for big buildings. The bigger the building, the higher is the effort to create the map needed for the on-line phase to determine the position of a device. In order to cope with this complexity, an approach for optimizing the off-line phase is realized. The system substantially lowers the number of positions at which fingerprint measurements have to be taken by identifying ideal positions. All other non- measured fingerprints are determined by using a form of the Log-Distance Path Loss Model.

Die App sucht nach Schlagwörtern in unterschiedlichen Media-Wikis (natürlich in jenen die OER-Materialien bereit stellen) und zeigt die Suchtreffer sowie die vorhandene Lizenz an. Man kann dann die Beiträge bookmarken oder auch teilen. Weiters ist die App um weitere Wikis jederzeit erweiterbar.

Im Rahmen unserer Vorlesung “Mobile Applications 2013” ist die App Pic of the Day entstanden. Diese App soll einfach dazu dienen ein tägliches Lächeln auf die Gesichter zu zaubern, indem sie schöne Bilder zeigt. Hintergrund dabei ist, dass wir aufgrund der Beurteilung von BenutzerInnen versuchen, die Präsentation der Bilder weiter zu optimieren indem die Empfehlungen immer besser werden.

User-friendly app focused on delivering daily thoughts and inspirations in a form of pictures.
Simple, fun and easy to use image browsing with image and thumbnail mode.
Thumbnail mode used as a browsing history, where all the previously seen pictures are saved.
Image mode used for browsing images in full screen mode. Furthermore, loading of a new image in image mode is done after liking/disliking the currently displayed picture, in order for the system to learn what the user wants and to display similar images later on. The image can be liked or disliked only once.
