New Education Wave (N-Ed Wave)?
After my talk at the Online Round Table about “EduPunk“ a really interesting debate started online. Fascinating how many people agreed and some other disagreed. I am quite happy with such a situation due to the fact the scientific discussions help to improve future education.
However I would like to list all the statements on the Web:
- Stephen mentioned “Martin is seeking to open up the VLE and apply the ideas of edupunk in an institutional context [and not as] as subversive or a challenge to the establishment but rather as a way of enhancing the teaching and learning environment,” I want to call it N-Ed Wave or some such thing. [Link]
- Graham disagreed “I am not convinced about the movement from punk to New Wave. But as I said in my original article, we need to establish edupunk as having a meaning in its own right. The music analogy is getting stretched and has limited further purchase.” [Link]
- Frances pointed out “Having checked out these and previous responses on Edupunk, I realise that I have missed a dimension that Chris Sessums captures in his response to a blog post on a previous Edupunk sessions”[Link]
- And of course also Steve shares his opinion “No, Edupunk promises to do for education what Punk did for music. Punk gave the British music industry a much need shot in the arm and saved it from stagnation. I also said that sometimes you need to be destructive in order to be creative” [Link]
- Gemma summarized my ideas as “While Ebner isn’t as revolutionary as he tries to find a way to open VLE to free contents and tools.” [Link]
I like to thank again for discussing this important topic and I am sure that we are all on the right way to enhance our education. If anyone likes to more know about all the stuff we are doing right now there is also a publication online available.

Der Tagungsband zum 12. Workshop “Multimedia in Bildung und Wirtschaft” an der TU Ilmenau ist nun erschienen. Ich habe hier einen Kurzbericht zu meinem Vortrag über “EduPunk – das kreative Chaos als Strategie” beigesteuert.
Abstract:
Web 2.0 und in konsequenter Weiterführung e-Learning 2.0 verändern langfristig die Lehre an traditionellen Bildungseinrichtungen. Auch wenn die Potentiale und Möglichkeiten noch lange nicht ausgeschöpft sind und viele Maßnahmen erst entstehen zeigen viele Untersuchungen wie Lehren und Lernen zukünftig stattfinden kann. EduPunk ist ein aus dieser Entwicklung entstandenes
Schlagwort und umschreibt einen „Do-it-yourself“ Ansatz sowohl von Unterrichtenden als auch Studierenden. Um diesen letztendlich gerecht werden zu können, sind aber auch Überlegungen seitens der IT-Infrastruktur sowie von
zentralen Einrichtungen, wie dem e-Learning Service nötig. Dieser Artikel beschreibt einen ersten Ansatz wie eine Integration verschiedensteter Webapplikation zur Unterstützung unterschiedlichster didaktischer Möglichkeiten durchgeführt werden
kann.

“Edupunk – Befreit das Bildungssystem!” beim Online Round Table 2009
Das Jahr 2009 hat kaum angefangen, da darf ich mich bereits über die erste Einladung zu einem “Online Round Table” freuen.
Thomas Bernhardt und Marcel Kirschner führen im Vorfeld zum Educamp 2009 in Ilmenau wie schon im Jahr 2007 diese Veranstaltung mit 4 Themen durch. Ich darf zusammen mit Steven Wheeler zu einem meiner derzeitigen Lieblingsthemen Stellung nehmen: “Edupunk – Befreit das Bildungssystem!“.
Der Termin ist der 6. April 2009, aber alle wichtigen Details findet man hier (sowie auch alle weiteren Veranstaltungen). Hoffe also auf rege Teilnahme und gute Diskussionen.

I have published an article about the necessity of EduPunk in formal institutions in the Journal of Social Informatics.
Titel: Why We Need Edupunk (Full Article)
Abstract:
Jim Groom coined in his Weblog a new term called EduPunk and expressed his anger about rigid and commercial platforms. He postulated “that taking imaginative experiments of others and wrapping them up as a product that can be bought” is ignoring valuable work of lecturers. By adding three facets Stephen Downes enhanced this definition and thus helped the term to seemingly sweep the edublogosphere.
In an emerging and growing educational field using Web 2.0 applications for teaching and learning purposes the term EduPunk deserves a closer attention. Considering that learning has always been a highly social process EduPunk must be seen as valuable and important way of educating people. EduPuk helps to carry out new didactical approaches and therefore improve the future of teaching and learning.
At Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) a new concept in consequence to this thoughts has been realized. The presented strategy allows combining traditional methods and e-Learning facilities as well as new Web 2.0 applications.
Objective: To present a concept for universities how the WorldWideWeb especially different Web 2.0 applications can be integrated in a daily used Learning Management System (LMS) and allow lecturers to be and become “EduPunks”.
Implementation: The existing learning management system was adapted and extended to the specific needs.
Conclusion: EduPunk as effective strategy for technology enhanced learning.

Am 09. und 10. Oktober 2008 findet an der TU Ilmenau der 12. Workshop “Multimedia in Bildung und Wirtschaft” statt.
Am ersten Tag referieren Vertreter deutschsprachiger Universitäten zu folgenden Fragen:

In den Fachvorträgen von Vertretern der E-Learning Center ausgewählter Hochschulen werden Fragestellungen zu
- Wie sehen neue Verbund- & Organisationsstrukturen aus?
- Wie werden virtuelle Lehr- und Lernräume konzipiert, gestaltet und eingesetzt?
- Wie kann eine Nachhaltigkeit moderner Lehre erzielt werden?
diskutiert.
Es freut mich sehr, dass man uns auch eingeladen hat unsere Perspektive darzulegen. Ich werde mit dem Titel “EduPunk – das kreative Chaos als Strategie” versuchen, den Einfluss von eLearning 2.0 auf die Hochschulelehre zu veranschaulichen.
