We made a contribution about our outcomes of the European alliance titled „Usage of (federated) Learning Management Systems in European University Alliances

Abstract:
In today’s rapidly evolving educational landscape, European universities are increasingly relying on digital technologies for collaboration and learning. European Universities, as transnational alliances, aim to reshape higher education by fostering academic exchange and innovation across borders. With over 40 alliances in existence, enhancing virtual mobility and exchange through interconnected learning infrastructures has become imperative. This paper provides insights into Learning Management System (LMS) adoption within European alliances, focusing on the Unite! alliance as a case study. While Unite! demonstrates successful implementation of Moodle as its central LMS, challenges persist in achieving uniformity across all partners. A desktop analysis of European alliances reveals that Moodle might be the most often used LMS in February 2023. A description of the LMS implementation within the Unite! analysis shows as well that a majority uses Moodle – at least as a second LMS. So, although the decision for a federated LMS based on Moodle might be the right one, these results as well indicate the need for tailored technical solutions for future developments for some partners and disparities in lecturers‘ and students‘ concerning a Moodle so that pre-emptive measures to ensure equitable participation are important. Despite these challenges, Unite!’s experience underscores the potential of Moodle as a widely adopted platform, prompting further exploration into solutions like LTI integration.

Our research about „Federated virtual learning management in a European University alliance: General challenges and first experiences using LTI to connect LMS in Unite!“ was published at this year’s ED-Media conference in Brussels.

Abstract:
This paper explores the challenges and first experiences of implementing federated virtual learning management within the European University Alliance Unite!. Through the lens of Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI), the study investigates the complexities inherent in connecting Learning Management Systems (LMS) across diverse institutional contexts. This research examines the general hurdles faced by European university alliances in adopting federated LMS. Additionally, it outlines the LMS infrastructure of Unite! in early 2024 and discusses the pilot initiatives undertaken to utilize LTI for connecting LMS platforms at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz). The pilots involve integrating Unite!’s Metacampus with various platforms, including Moodle-based systems from TU Graz. Drawing from these pilot experiences, the paper presents insights and lessons learned regarding the efficacy of LTI in facilitating cross-platform connectivity within Unite! and offers implications for future implementations.

[publication] The Analysis of Learning Management System towards Students’ Cognitive Learning Outcome #tugraz #researg

Our article titled „The Analysis of Learning Management System towards Students’ Cognitive Learning Outcome“ got published in the Journal of Emerging Technologies in Learning (iJET).

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the implementation of the moodle and edmodo learning management system (LMS) in education, to identify the specific features of the LMS that were utilized in the learning process, and to assess the impact of the LMS on student learning outcomes, drawing on cognitive learning theory. The research method is a systematic literature review (SLR) using the Scopus and Taylor & Francis databases, guided by the PRISMA (preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analyses) protocol, to analyze the data. The validity of the study was tested using the Gregory test with four expert examiners, namely an SLR expert, an LMS expert, and experts in cognitive learning outcomes. The results of the electronic database search focused on articles related to LMS implementation, LMS features, and student cognitive learning outcomes. This systematic literature review identified four key stages that serve as indicators of LMS implementation: 1) introduction, 2) registration, 3) learning materials, and 4) evaluation (assessment or feedback). The LMS features used in learning are grouped into four sections: communication features, course content features, course delivery features, and assignment features. The findings of the literature review indicate that the implementation of LMS and the features utilized in the learning process have an impact on various aspects of learning. These include learning satisfaction, engagement, learning experience, comfort, effectiveness, motivation, and the improvement of student learning outcomes.

Diese Lektion stellt Learning Analytics Dashboards im Bereich von Learning Management Anwendungen vor. Ein solches Dashboard ist der Learners Corner, der im Projekt „Learning Analytics – Studierende im Fokus“ entwickelt wurde, um Lernende beim selbstregulierten Lernen zu unterstützen. Er bietet fünf Widgets, darunter einen Planer und ein Learning Diary Widget. Das Dashboard wird sowohl von Lernenden als auch von Lehrenden genutzt, um das selbstständige Planen und Setzen von Zielen zu fördern. Der Learners Corner wird am Ende des Projekts unter einer freien Lizenz, Open Source, veröffentlicht.

Our article about „Automated System Testing for a Learning Management System“ was published in the International Journal of Emerging Technologies in Learning (iJET).

Abstract:
Over the last years software development life-cycles have continuously been shortened and new releases are being deployed at a more and more frequent level. In order to ensure the quality of those releases, a strong shift towards automated testing at all testing levels has become noticeable throughout the software development industry. At system testing level, the scope of testing is the developed product as a whole, tested in a test environment that has a very close resemblance to the production system. Because of this system-wide scope and the many potential sources for failures, the implementation of automated tests at this level is challenging. Exhaustive testing is neither feasible nor maintainable, therefore proper designed test cases that cover important functionality are essential. Due to increasing laws and regulations on data protection and data privacy, proper management of test data used in automated testing is as important. This paper discusses how automated system tests for TeachCenter 3.0, Graz University of Technology’s learning management system, were implemented.
