Abstract:
Open access journals have developed new business processes and reve- nue models. Within our contribution we will describe and discuss a new service and revenue model for open access journals: the personal book printing service for the Open Journal System (OJS). To start with, we will give a short introduction to open access journals and their revenue models, new print-on-demand services, and the most often used open journal system. Building upon this state of the art, we will describe the technical prototype of our new “personal book printing service” for OJS and discuss our first experiences.

Zusammenfassung:
Schreiben und Lesen ist eine der grundlegenden Fertigkeiten, die in der Schule vermittelt wird. Durch die Existenz von Computern, Tablets und Handys werden den Schülerinnen neue Zugange zum Schreib- und Leselernlernprozess ermöglicht. Diese greift das Erasmus + Projekt IDeRBlog auf, indem es für das Schreiben eine Internetplattform mit vielen Möglichkeiten zur Verbesserung der Rechtschreibung zur Verfügung stellt.

Lehr- und Lerntechnologien / Educational Technology #tugraz
Ich darf mit heutigem Datum die Organisationseinheit Lehr- und Lerntechnologien unter der Leitung des Vizerektors für Lehre an der Technischen Universität Graz leiten. Das Rektorat hat damit ein aus meiner Sicht damit die Zeichen der Zeit erkannt und ein wichtiges Signal gesetzt: Technologien sind nahtloser Bestandteil des gesamten Lehr- und Lernprozesses insbesondere auch an einer Universtität.
Für uns bedeutet es einen riesigen Schritt aus einer 2006 gegründeten Arbeitsgruppe und seit 2007 Unterabteilung des Zentralen Informatikdienstest in die Eigenverantwortung. Als Ziel hab ich mir vorgenommen noch stärker Technologien in den Lehrbetrieb zu integrieren und die Online-Welt mit der Universität zu verschmelzen bzw. auch entscheidend voranzubringen. Our publication about the Learning Analytics implementation within the IDER-blog procject has been published: „Improved German Spelling Acquisition through Learning Analytics“.
Abstract:
Many pupils struggle with the acquisition of the German orthography. In order to meet this struggle a web based platform for German speaking countries is currently developed. This platform aims to motivate pupils aged 8 to 12 to improve their writing and spelling competences. In this platform pupils can write texts in the form of blog entries concerning everyday events or special topics. Since the core of this platform consists of an intelligent dictionary focussing on different categories of misspellings, students can improve their own spelling skills by trying to correct their mistakes according to the feedback of the system. Teachers are informed about specific orthographic problems of a particular student by getting a qualitative analysis of the misspellings from this intelligent dictionary. The article focuses on the development of the intelligent dictionary, details concerning the requirements, the categorization and the used wordlist. Further, necessary information on German orthography, spelling competence in general and the platform itself is given. By implementing methods of learning analytics it is expected to gain deeper insight into the process of spelling acquisition and thus serves as a basis to develop better materials on the long run.

Our conference paper about „Benchmarking the Effectiveness of Associating Chains of Links for Exploratory Semantic Search“ at this year 4th International Workshop on Intelligent Exploration of Semantic Data (IESD 2015) is now online.
Abstract:
Linked Data offers an entity-based infrastructure to resolve indirect relations between resources, expressed as chains of links. If we could benchmark how effective retrieving chains of links from these sources is, we can motivate why they are a reliable addition for exploratory search interfaces. A vast number of applications could reap the benefits from encouraging insights in this field. Especially all kinds of knowledge discovery tasks related for instance to ad-hoc decision support and digital assistance systems. In this paper, we explain a benchmark model for evaluating the effectiveness of associating chains of links with keyword-based queries. We illustrate the benchmark model with an example case using academic library and conference metadata where we measured precision involving targeted expert users and directed it towards search effectiveness. This kind of typical semantic search engine evaluation focusing on information retrieval metrics such as precision is typically biased towards the final result only. However, in an exploratory search scenario, the dynamics of the intermediary links that could lead to potentially relevant discoveries are not to be neglected

Am 14.1 darf ich in Augsburg am Tag der Lehre einen Input liefern. Wie wahrscheinlich gewohnt von mir, stell ich zu Beginn gerne eine provokative Frage: „Braucht der Student von Morgen noch E-Learning?„. Ich denke das gesamte Programm lohnt es sich vorbeizuschauen.
