[publication] Mobile Applications for Encyclopedias #AustriaForum #mobileLearning

Paul developed within his master thesis mobile applications for the Austria Forum. We summarized this work in a chapter about „Mobile Applications for Encyclopedias“ within the book „Mobile and Ubiquitous Learning. Perspectives on Rethinking and Reforming Education“.

Abstract:

In this research work a survey of tested mobile applications will be summarized, which were selected by a few defined prerequisites, and a brief overview is given of what is available in the corresponding stores. It will also be shown how the individual mobile applications for encyclopedias are presenting and providing information to users. This cover its visual representation and the manner in how information is retrieved. Additionally a new smart way will be introduced in which we can deal with information with a special focus to encyclopedias and mobile devices. The prototyped application carries out special features, which makes usage of mobile devices capabilities. The presented approach follows a slightly more aggressive way on how to bring information to users. For example it requires the permission of user and tells him/ her actively that there is an interesting piece of information close by his/ her location. Communication between the device and users is done using the notification system. To satisfy the needs of users a set of options will be presented so that they can customize time and number of notifications. Those settings shall also prevent the battery from draining to fast and give the user control about it. The outcome is a a prototype with a set of features which allows users to retrieve information based on their mood and their willingness of spending effort. If he/ she is eager to learn the application provides ways to support that. If he/ she just want some quick information there are ways to get it. And if he/ she wants a new way of information retrieval via mobile applications for encyclopedias the prototype offers the above mentioned possibility to do so

[publication] Enhancements in Engineering Design Education at Austrian HTL #reseach #SecondaryEducation

Our contribution to this year International Conference on Engineering Design in Vancouver was titled „Enhancements in Engineering Design Education at Austrian HTL

Introduction:

In 2007, a research partnership program between Austrian schools and universities called „Sparkling Science“ was founded by the Austrian federal ministry of Science, Research and Economy (Birke, 2013). The main objective has been to bring science and schools together, in particular, to increase interest for STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The reason for this project is because of huge demand for engineers both in Austria and in Europe. Through such projects, students of Austrian schools are able to work together with scientists of universities or universities of applied sciences on defined project tasks (Probst et al., 2016). Since 2007 the Austrian vocational school HTL Linz LITEC has conducted three Sparkling Science projects with TU Wien, with two projects focusing introducing product data management (PDM) to engineering design education and the other project focusing on systems engineering.

[publication] Social Semantic Search: A Case Study on Web 2.0 for Science #semanticweb #tugraz

The outcome of the research work of Laurens and Selver got published now in the International Journal on Semantic Web and Information Systems (IJSWIS) using the title Social Semantic Search: A Case Study on Web 2.0 for Science.

Abstract:

When researchers formulate search queries to find relevant content on the Web, those queries typically consist of keywords that can only be matched in the content or its metadata. The Web of Data extends this functionality by bringing structure and giving well-defined meaning to the content and it enables humans and machines to work together using controlled vocabularies. Due the high degree of mismatches between the structure of the content and the vocabularies in different sources, searching over multiple heterogeneous repositories of structured data is considered challenging. Therefore, the authors present a semantic search engine for researchers facilitating search in research related Linked Data. To facilitate high-precision interactive search, they annotated and interlinked structured research data with ontologies from various repositories in an effective semantic model. Furthermore, the authors‘ system is adaptive as researchers can synchronize using new social media accounts and efficiently explore new datasets.
