[workshop] Using Microblogging to enhance communication within Communities of Practice

Due to the fact that I agreed to serve as member of the program committee I also like to hint to the forthcoming workshop „Using Microblogging to enhance communication within Communities of Practice“ (MicroECoP) within the WCC 2010 conference in Brisbane, Australia.
The workshop aims to discuss:

A number of questions are emerging from the early use of micro-blogs as social networking tools that connect communities of practice and interest. These include: How can microblogs support the development of professional communities of practice? How can microblogs be effectively incorporated into formalised professional learning? How can we measure the optimum levels of engagement necessary for microblogs to be successful social networking tools within professional communities of practice? How are communities of practice enhanced or enriched as a result of the application of microblogs? What about issues of security, privacy and intellectual property – how can these be protected? Do the filtering features on microblogs constitute semantic tools?

[publication] Social networking in scientific conferences – Twitter as tool for strengthen a scientific

Our publication about „Social networking in scientific conferences – Twitter as tool for strengthen a scientific“ for this Science 2.0 for TEL Workshop at ECTEL conference is now online available.
Abstract:

Twitter is the fastest growing member community of the last year. With a rate of 1382% it grows 6 times faster than for example the world biggest social networking application Facebook. In this paper we ask how Twitter can serve as resource at scientific conferences and support the scientific community. Furthermore we ask if Twitter ads any scientific value to conferences. We chose this year ED-MEDIA conference as example for the use of Twitter at a scientific conference and show how the micro-blogging tool got seamlessly integrated in the well-known communication infrastructure of conferences.

Workshops at ED-Media 2009

At this year ED-Media Conference we will do two workshops – or other way round both submitted workshops were accepted.

Meine erste Begegnung mit dem OLPC

Gestern hatte ich mein erstes Vergnügen mit unseren OLPCs. Im Rahmen eines Workshops an der Pädagogischen Hochschule hier in Graz versuchten wir, die grundsätzliche Funktionalität kennenzulernen.
Nun ich glaub ein Bild sagt fast mehr als tausende weitere Wörter hier im Blog.:

Man kann zwar Hannes zustimmen, dass es im Prinzip ein sehr positives Erlebnis war, aber trotzdem sind noch einige Schwachstellen erkennbar. Gut, dass der Rechner an sich langsam ist und auch die Handhabung der Tastatur gewöhnungsbedürftig, wird für das eigentliche Zielpublikum (Kinder) nicht so relevant sein. Aber als bekennender iPhone User (achja, darüber werde ich nun auch schön langsam zu bloggen beginnen) bin ich von der Usability nicht wirklich angetan. Das generelle System ist zumindest für mich gewöhnungsbedürftig- mag sein, dass dies für Kinder keine große Rolle spielt, da diese ja nicht wirklich vorbelastet sind, jedoch intutitiv ist etwas anderes. Vor allem die ersten Rückmeldungen der Lehrer, dass die Kinder sowieso einfach den Powerknopf betätigen, wenn sie nicht mehr weiter wissen, sollte man überdenken.
Auch die Programme, welche von 6-8 jährigen zu bedienen sind, haben teilweise eine sehr komplexe Oberfläche. Gut, damit kam ich zum dem Schluss, dass es noch viel Arbeit gebe und wir auch gefordert sind.
Abschließend sollten man noch kurz ein paar Worte über die so hochgepriesene Verbindungsmöglichkeit der einzelnen Rechner untereinander verlieren: Sie funkioniert – prinzipiell, aber unstabil. Teilweise konnten wir keine Verbindung herstellen, dann doch wieder, dann wieder nicht … naja, die erste Begegnung verlief also spannend. Nichtsdestotrotz bin ich von der generellen Idee und vom Potential angetan und deshalb lohnt es sicher darüber weiter nachzudenken – und ich werde weiterberichten.
