[publication] Lessons Learned when transferring Learning Analytics Interventions across Institutions #lak18 #research

Our publication at this year LAK18-conference about „Lessons Learned when transferring Learning Analytics Interventions across Institutions“ is now online available.

Abstract:

Learning Analytics is a promising research field, which is advancing quickly. Therefore, it finally impacts research, practice, policy, and decision making in the field of education. Nonetheless, there are still influencing obstacles when establishing Learning Analytics initiatives on higher education level. Besides the much discussed ethical and moral concerns, there is also the matter of data privacy. In 2015, the European collaboration project STELA started with the main goal to enhance the Successful Transition from secondary to higher Education by means of Learning Analytics. Together, the partner universities develop, test, and assess Learning Analytics approaches that focus on providing feedback to students. Some promising approaches are then shared between the partner universities. Therefore, the transferability of the Learning Analytics initiatives is of great significance. During the duration of our project, we found a variety of difficulties, we had to overcome to transfer one of those Learning Analytics initiatives, the Learning Tracker from one partner to the other. Despite, some of the difficulties can be categorized as small, all of them needed our attention and were time consuming. In this paper, we present the lessons learned while solving these obstacles.

[publication] Involving Stakeholders in Learning Analytics: Opportunity or Threat for Learning Analytics at Scale?

Our workshop publication at this year LAK18-conference about „Involving Stakeholders in Learning Analytics: Opportunity or Threat for Learning Analytics at Scale?“ is now online available.

Abstract:

This article introduces the goal and activities of the LAK 2018 half-day workshop on the involvement of stakeholders for achieving learning analytics at scale. The goal of the half-day workshop is to gather different stakeholders to discuss at-scale learning analytics interventions. In particular the workshop focuses on learning analytics applications and learning dashboards that go beyond the implementation in a single course or context, but that have at least the potential for scaling across different courses, programs, and institutes. The main theme of the workshop is to explore how the involvement of different stakeholders can strengthen or hinder learning analytics at scale. The key findings, recommendations, and conclusions of the workshop will be presented in a summarizing report, which will be shaped as a SWOT analysis for stakeholder involvement for achieving learning analytics at scale.

[publication] Can Learning Analytics Find Success in Didactical Measurements? Results from a MOOC Case Study #tugraz #research

We are very proud to be part of the book „Digital Workplace Learning“ with a contribution about our MOOC research. This time we take a look to a particular MOOC and reported about the case study. Our chapter „Can Learning Analytics Find Success in Didactical Measurements? Results from a MOOC Case Study“ is now published.

Abstract:

In recent years, massive open online courses (MOOCs) led the road into a new era of learning environment systems. Since 2008, e-Learning witnessed a new type of course which is massive in student numbers, open for anyone, and available for all without limitations. MOOCs integrate social networking, accessible online resources, and open-ended outcomes and are publicly shared. In addition, MOOCs offer several online variables that allow researchers from analytical disciplines (learning analytics) to translate these variable data values into research actions and interpret patterns. In this chapter, we present a detailed analysis of a MOOC case study offered in the previous 2 years, 2015 and 2016. The Graz University of Technology, the University of Graz, and partners from the Medical University of Graz collaborated on a project producing a MOOC called “Dr. Internet.” This MOOC aims to investigate whether the Internet helps or hurts in the endeavor to increase health literacy of the public and how it affects the practitioner-patient relationship. Nevertheless, the research study in this chapter is looking onto a different point of view. We will follow a quantitative investigation and apply learning analytics techniques on learners’ behavior as well as scrutinize traces they left behind in videos, discussion forums, and quizzes. In addition, we try to further inspect the dropout rate and level of engagement. It can be outlined that the early analysis results show that those MOOCs behaved similar to other studies but they differ in the higher number of reads in the discussion forum. Reasonable didactical interventions assisted to change learners’ attitudes toward online learning. This chapter will also describe the didactical approach of the Dr. Internet MOOCs.

What are the Challenges of Learning Analytics in Higher Education? #research #stela

We are proud that our article on „Learning Analytics in Higher Education—A Literature Review“ are named, discussed and cited on the website „student success“ of the three universities Leiden-Delft-Rotterdam.

The authors at the end argue that Learning Analytics imply moral practices. The ethical constraints drive the above-mentioned limitations to a wider extent and they ask for more and more consideration of the type of data used of Higher Education in Learning Analytics.

[publication] Development of a Dashboard for Learning Analytics in Higher Education #STELA #LearningAnalytics

Our first publication at this year HCII 2017 conference was about „Development of a Dashboard for Learning Analytics in Higher Education“.
Abstract:

In this paper, we discuss the design, development, and implementation of a Learning Analytics (LA) dashboard in the area of Higher Education (HE). The dashboard meets the demands of the different stakeholders, maximizes the mainstreaming potential and transferability to other contexts, and is developed in the path of Open Source. The research concentrates on developing an appropriate concept to fulfil its objectives and finding a suitable technology stack. Therefore, we determine the capabilities and functionalities of the dashboard for the different stakeholders. This is of significant importance as it identifies which data can be collected, which feedback can be given, and which functionalities are provided. A key approach in the development of the dashboard is the modularity. This leads us to a design with three modules: the data collection, the search and information processing, and the data presentation. Based on these modules, we present the steps of finding a fitting Open Source technology stack for our concept and discuss pros and cons trough out the process.
