[publication] The Modeling of Harmonious Color Combinations …

Our contribution „The Modeling of Harmonious Color Combinations for improved Usability and User Experience (UX)“ to this year International Conference on Information Technology Interfaces is now online available.
Abstract:

This study compares three different models for the calculation and prediction of harmonious color combinations. Therefore a dataset of user rated color combinations was taken from a large online database. The user rating was compared to the outcome of the three models on this dataset in order to test the performance of the models. The first model based on the idea that color combinations are more pleasing the greater their difference in brightness. The second model is a slightly modified version of Ou & Lou (2006) using chromatic difference, lightness sum, lightness difference and hue effect. The last model was invented by us and is based on an experiment of Polzella & Montgomery (1993). From the outcome of their experiment we generated a lookup table for single color rating. This rating
is then used in a formula, which is able to evaluate the color harmony for color combinations up to five colors. This model also performed best in the overall comparison between the three color harmony models.

[publication] Is Your University Ready For the Ne(x)t-Generation?

Abstract:

Abstract: At Graz University of Technology a survey about the hardware equipment and the Web2.0 skills among students of the first semester took place for the second time. This paper reflects the results of that two years evaluation. It answers the questions whether the net-generation already has arrived at universities or not and which consequences this fact has on the teaching and learning behaviors as well as infrastructural aspects of a university. Although young students are technologically increasingly well equipped they do not exhaust the potential of their devices or the potential of uncommon Web2.0 applications yet. Nevertheless the applications and communicational ways of a student’s average usage are signals not to be ignored by a university management. They not only indicate a dawning basic change of a typical student’s life but demand a rethinking of essential structural elements at universities right now.

Abstract:

In this paper we have performed a content analysis using a collection of papers from Ed-Media conferences archive. Various current trends in research topics, change of interest in contributions from across the world in the field of e-learning have been described using our internally built visualization tool. This visualization tool reveals the evolution or decline of research themes, hot research topics and key researchers across the world. In addition to this, evolution of countries, continents and institutions across research topics has been described as well.

[publication] How People are Using Twitter during Conferences

Together with my colleagues we researched about how People are using Twitter during conferences. This publication was presented at this year EduMedia conference.
Abstract:

The popularity of microblogging, with special emphasis on twitter, the most famous application of the kind, is growing rapidly. This kind of tools for micro-exchange of information and communication is changing the daily life of knowledgeable worker as well as
Internet savvy people. From this perspective this paper aims to show how Twitter can be used during conferences, and furthermore how different people are using it. With the help of a survey and analysis of the collected data, benefits regarding the use of a microblogging tool
such as Twitter can be presented. The publication shows evidence on how Twitter can enhance the knowledge of a given group or community by miStatistical data was also used to support this research.

New Education Wave (N-Ed Wave)?

After my talk at the Online Round Table about „EduPunk a really interesting debate started online. Fascinating how many people agreed and some other disagreed. I am quite happy with such a situation due to the fact the scientific discussions help to improve future education.
However I would like to list all the statements on the Web:

  • Stephen mentioned „Martin is seeking to open up the VLE and apply the ideas of edupunk in an institutional context [and not as] as subversive or a challenge to the establishment but rather as a way of enhancing the teaching and learning environment,“ I want to call it N-Ed Wave or some such thing. [Link]
  • Graham disagreed „I am not convinced about the movement from punk to New Wave. But as I said in my original article, we need to establish edupunk as having a meaning in its own right. The music analogy is getting stretched and has limited further purchase.“ [Link]
  • Frances pointed out „Having checked out these and previous responses on Edupunk, I realise that I have missed a dimension that Chris Sessums captures in his response to a blog post on a previous Edupunk sessions“[Link]
  • And of course also Steve shares his opinion „No, Edupunk promises to do for education what Punk did for music. Punk gave the British music industry a much need shot in the arm and saved it from stagnation. I also said that sometimes you need to be destructive in order to be creative“ [Link]
  • Gemma summarized my ideas as „While Ebner isn’t as revolutionary as he tries to find a way to open VLE to free contents and tools.“ [Link]

[publication] Einsatz von Quick Response Codes für ortsbezogene Dienstleistungen

Im Rahmen der Geoinformatik Tagung 2009 durften wir an einem Beitrag zu „Einsatz von Quick Response Codes für ortsbezogene Dienstleistungen“ mitarbeiten.
Einleitung:

In einer immer stärker vernetzten Gesellschaft ist der Bedarf wie auch das Angebot an Information sehr vielfältig und stetig wachsend. Damit ein Konsument nicht mit unnötiger Information belastet wird, beziehungsweise der Informationsanbieter auf die speziellen Forderungen seiner Kunden
eingehen kann, sind der räumliche Kontext und die thematischen Bedürfnisse im Präsentationskonzept des Anbieters zu berücksichtigen ….
Im Vergleich dazu besitzt ein großer Teil der in Verwendung befindlichen Mobiltelefone eine integrierte Digitalkamera, die auch zur Bestimmung des Standortes eingesetzt werden kann. Hierbei werden spezielle Barcodes (z.B. QR-Codes) fotografiert und interpretiert. Diese Codes können Verweise auf thematische Informationen in Abhängigkeit des Standortes beinhalten.

Technology Enhanced Learning

Aus gegebenem Anlass habe versucht darzustellen, wie Technology Enhanced Learning sich im Bereich der Informatikwissenschaften positioniert. Darüberhinaus versuche ich auch eine deutliche Abgrenzung zum Begriff e-Learning.
