Our publicaton „M-Learning in the Field: A Mobile Geospatial Wiki as an Example for Geo-Tagging in Civil Engineering“ pulblished in the book „Looking Toward the Future of Technology-Enhanced Education“ is as Draft Version online available.
Abstract:

In subjects such as Civil Engineering, Architecture, Geology etc., education is mostly based on visual information. For example, in Civil Engineering every building can be seen as a unique object at a certain location. During the education of Civil Engineers many field based studies and excursions take place, however, not only the images but also geographical coordinates are essential. Wikis have been in use for collaborative learning for more than ten years. Mobile phones provide access to them from nearly everywhere. The availability of those technologies has led to rapid advances in the area of m-Learning and the possibility to apply challenging constructive educational concepts. Consequently, in this paper we describe the user centered design, development and evaluation of a combination of these technologies to support collaborative learning in the field: A Wiki-based mobile geospatial information system, the so-called TUGeoWiki. The primary objective of this geowiki is to provide a user-friendly tool for mobile collaborative learning for all areas where geo-tagged information could be useful. Moreover, TUGeoWiki was developed in order to provide the integration of external map material via map APIs including information such as that delivered by Google maps. Subsequently, it is possible to provide both highly detailed maps and satellite images without having the need to license such material. Furthermore, the user interfaces used by such tools is well established, due to the increasing number of mapping related mashups. The evaluation during an extensive field test within a large civil engineering excursion to various large-scale construction sites in Austria demonstrated that collaborative learning can be successfully supported by the application of a geowiki.

[CfP] 4. Workshop E-Learning 2.0

Im Rahmen der 8. e-Learning Fachtagung Informatik – DeLFI 2010 findet heuer der 4. Workshop zum Thema e-Learning 2.0 statt. Der Call for Papers [CfP] ist soeben auf meinem Schreibtisch gelandet und ich weise natürlich gerne darauf hin:

Social Software und andere Ansätze des Web 2.0 verfügen in Bildungskontexten über sehr hohe Potenziale und werden vermehrt in solchen eingesetzt. Lernen ist in aller Regel und insbesondere auch in informellen Lernsettings ein sozialer Vorgang, welcher durch die das Web prägenden Prinzipien befördert werden kann. Zum einen können typische Nachteile, die dem Erfolg klassischer E-Learning-Szenarien entgegenstehen, gemildert werden, zum anderen ermöglichen mit Social Software ausgestaltete E-Learning-Angebote eine Reihe weitergehender Mehrwerte gegenüber traditionellen Lernkontexten. Insbesondere erleichtern die geringen Partizipationsbarrieren Nutzern den Zugang zu Bildungsangeboten, fördern deren aktive Beteiligung und die Nachvollziehbarkeit und Transparenz von Lern- und Kommunikationsprozessen und erlauben deren Analyse und Auswertung für zukünftige Lernsituationen (Metalernen).

Im Rahmen der Vorlesung „Gesellschaftliche Aspekte der Informationstechnologie“ an der TU Graz halte ich heute diesen Vortrag rund um das Thema „e-Learning X.0„. Neben einer Aufarbeitung des derzeitigen Forschungsstand am Gebiet von Technology Enhanced Learning, versuch ich mich auch etwas in zukünftigen Entwicklungen:

[paper accepted] Capture Your University

Our paper for this year IADIS e-Learning 2010 Conference in Freiburg/ Germany about our Podcasting and Streaming Activities has been accepted. The title of the publication is „Capture Your University„.
Abstract:

This paper reflects the experiences of four years of managing (lecture) recording activities at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz), its history, development and management, its increase and evaluation as well as its future trends which have already set into life by launching Austria’s first iTunes U platform for a university of technology in November 2009. The paper recommends a way of implementing podcasting and streaming into university daily routine from a didactical point of view as well as in practice. The pros and cons of screening, streaming, live-streaming or simple capturing are being discussed in this context. Finally the next step to a university wide automated recording system is touched which is an unavoidable result of the successful way of podcasting TU Graz has decided to go.

Hopefully we meet each other there for fruitful discussions.
