[publication] Rolle und Herausforderungen von Online-Kursen (MOOCs) für die Hochschullehre #research #mooc

Unser Beitrag „Rolle und Herausforderungen von Online-Kursen (MOOCs) für die Hochschullehre“ wurde nun als Teil des Buches „Qualität in Studium und Lehre – Kompetenz- und Wissensmanagement im steirischen Hochschulraum“ veröffentlicht.

Zusammenfassung:

Über den Einsatz von Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in der Hochschullehre wird mittlerweile ein breiter wissenschaftlicher Diskurs geführt, der jedoch zumeist allgemeine Rahmenbedingungen sowie geografische und gesellschaftliche Unterschiede weitgehend außer Acht lässt. Der vorliegende Beitrag beschäftigt sich daher mit den allgemeinen Herausforderungen bei der Integration von Online-Kursen in die Hochschullehre, wobei der deutschsprachige Raum (und besonders Österreich) im Mittelpunkt steht. Auf der Basis von Experteninterviews und den bisherigen Erfahrungen mit der ersten österreichischen MOOC-Plattform www.imoox.at werden notwendige Voraussetzungen und Erfolgsfaktoren für die Produktion und die Verwendung von MOOCs an (österreichischen) Universitäten dargestellt. Dabei wird explizit auf die spezifischen Rollen der AkteurInnen als Lehrende und Studierende sowie auf die Verantwortlichkeiten der Hochschulen und der politischen EntscheidungsträgerInnen eingegangen.

Im Rahmen unserer Vorlesung „Mobile Applications 2016“ hat man eine App zum Schritt zählen erstellt:

StepForward uses the built-in motion sensor in your iPhone to track your daily and weekly step activity. The track data is then used to present the appropriate information you need in order to keep up to your goals. For every step you take, you get one step closer to earn achievements based on your progress. The purpose of the achievements is to motivate you to stay healthy and walk more, but also to make it more entertaining. This application is developed by two Swedish exchange student at TU Graz, Austria, in the course Mobile Applications.
Every step you take, every move you make, we’ll be counting it!

Im Rahmen unserer Vorlesung „Mobile Applications 2016“ hat man eine App für die Erasmusstudierenden erstellt. Wir hoffen, dass damit der Anfang leichter ist an der TU Graz:

[ITuG] Buch zu Making an Schulen #making #itug

Markus Peißl hat seine Masterarbeit zum spannenden Thema „Making in Schulen“ verfasst und er stellt diese für die ITuG-Serie zur Verfügung.

Zusammenfassung:

Die Making-Bewegung ist eine Do-It-Yourself-Kultur, bei der Selbststandigkeit, kooperatves Arbeiten und das Lernen durch Tun im Vordergrund stehen. Making-Workshops in Schulen sind eine Moglichkeit, unter Einhaltung von grundlegenden Prinzipien, mit verschiedensten Making-Werkzeugen ofene und nachhaltge Lernsetngs anzubieten. In zwei Interviews berichten Experten im 3D-Druck-Bereich daruber, wie Schulen erfolgreich 3D-Drucker im Unterricht einsetzen konnen und nehmen Stellung zu Hurden im Schulsetng. Beginnend mit der Planung, uber die Durchfuhrung bis hin zur Evaluierung wird ein an einer osterreichischen allgemeinbildenden hoheren Schule erfolgreich abgehaltener Making-Workshop analysiert. Diese Arbeit bietet eine, auf gesammelten Erfahrungen basierende, Checkliste fur die Planung zukunfiger Workshops an.

[publication] De-Identification in Learning Analytics #LA #research

Our publication about „De-Identification in Learning Analytics“ got published in the Journal of Learning Analytics.
Abstract:

Learning Analytics has reserved its position as an important field in the educational sector. However, the large-scale collection, processing and analyzing of data have steered the wheel beyond the border lines and faced an abundance of ethical breaches and constraints. Revealing learners’ personal information and attitudes, as well as their activities, are major aspects that lead to personally identify individuals. Yet, de-identification can keep the process of Learning Analytics in progress while reducing the risk of inadvertent disclosure of learners’ identities. In this paper, the authors talk about de-identification methods in the context of learning environment and propose a first prototype conceptual approach that describes the combination of anonymization strategies and Learning Analytics techniques.

[publication] What is Learning Analytics about? A Survey of Different Methods Used in 2013-2015 #LearningAnalytics #tugraz

Our publication about „What is Learning Analytics about? A Survey of Different Methods Used in 2013-2015“ for this year Smart Learning Excellence Conference in Dubai is now online available. The slides have been already published here.
Abstract:

The area of Learning Analytics has developed enormously since the first International Conference on Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK) in 2011. It is a field that combines different disciplines such as computer science, statistics, psychology and pedagogy to achieve its intended objectives. The main goals illustrate in creating convenient interventions on learning as well as its environment and the final optimization about learning domain’s stakeholders (Khalil & Ebner, 2015b). Because the field matures and is now adapted in diverse educational settings, we believe there is a pressing need to list its own research methods and specify its objectives and dilemmas. This paper surveys publications from Learning Analytics and Knowledge conference from 2013 to 2015 and lists the significant research areas in this sphere. We consider the method profile and classify them into seven different categories with a brief description on each. Furthermore, we show the most cited method categories using Google scholar. Finally, the authors raise the challenges and constraints that affect its ethical approach through the meta-analysis study. It is believed that this paper will help researchers to identify the common methods used in Learning Analytics, and it will assist by establishing a future forecast towards new research work taking into account the privacy and ethical issues of this strongly emerged field.

Zusammenfassung:

Das „Maker Movement“ erlebt derzeit einen großen Aufschwung. Dies liegt einerseits am Aufkommen von FabLabs, Makerspaces und andererseits an immer günstiger werdender Hardware und zunehmender Digitalität innerhalb der Gesellschaft:
Do It Yourself – einfach Machen lautet die Devise.
