[publication] Game-Based Learning with the Leap Motion Controller #GameBasedLearning #research

Our chapter on „Game-Based Learning with the Leap Motion Controller“ within the book Handbook of Research on Gaming Trends in P-12 Education is published now.
Abstract:

Learning through games is a promising field for the future of education. In this research study the authors describe the development process of an educational application, a game targeting P-12 students. This application is meant to be used with the Leap Motion Controller, a small 3D infrared camera, which while in use, tracks the user’s hands and finger movements in the 3D space. The chapter describes the application itself and presents the outcomes of a field study, which was carried out with a small group of students at an elementary school. It can be pointed out that there is a huge potential of using innovative input devices in school education.

[publication] Mining and Visualizing Trends from Educational Systems using Linked Data

Our chapter about „Mining and Visualizing Trends from Educational Systems using Linked Data“ as part of the book „Immersive Education“ got published.
Abstract:

This work introduces a case study on usage of semantic context modelling and creation of Linked Data from logs in educational systems like a Personal Learning Environment (PLE) with purpose on improvements in generally with respect to social and semantic analysis of the parameters on user and activity centric level. Sample case study demonstrates the usage of semantic modelling of the activity context using adequate domain specific ontologies and semantic technologies and visualization of such data as result of analysis of such modelled data represented in the form of Linked Data. This approach implies the easy interfacing and extensibility on machine or human level offering fast insight on statistical trends.

[publication] Design and Evaluation of a User Interface for an Interaction Supported Video Platform

Our contribution about „Design and Evaluation of a User Interface for an Interaction Supported Video Platform“ at this year uDay in Dornbirn is now online available.

Abstract:

Learning videos are currently more and more in use because of the evolving trend of so-called MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) (Khalil & Ebner, 2013). However learning videos have only a con-suming character due to the fact that they are of passive nature. According to Carr-Chellman & Duchastel (2000) interaction as well as communication are key features of a successful online course. Because of that a web based information system has been developed to support learning videos with different forms of interac-tion (Ebner et al., 2013). It is obvious that such an information system has to be easily useable and due to that this research study presents the development process of a suitable User Interface (UI). The associated usabil-ity study as well as the field study point out that the design approach is generally working and also identified some components to improve

[publication] All about MOOCs

Unser Beitrag für den uDay XIII an der FH Vorarlberg mit dem Titel „All About MOOCs“ ist nun online verfügbar.
Abstract:

[publication] Using Cloud Services in a Modern Learning Management System

Our publication „Using Cloud Services in a Modern Learning Management System“ as part of a Special Issue of the Journal of Computing and Information Technology (CIT) has been published online.
Abstract:

LMS (Learning Management Systems) today are being widely used in almost every educational facility. In the last years all conceivable use cases that need to be carried out by such LMS have been defined and the features a modern LMS needs to offer are very clear. Rarely do we find something a teacher or student needs that an LMS cannot offer. So the task for LMS developers shifted from offering all tools a teacher or student needs to make these tools as convenient to use as possible. Our goal in this research work is to describe the web services we use in TeachCenter, an LMS that has been widely used for the past years at Graz University of Technology to simplify the use of certain components. It can be pointed out that cloud services have to be an integral part of a modern LMS.
